White Cockade

about

In Scotland, people of the Victorian era and before used to wear clan badges. This is thought to have started as a means of identifying the members of various clans in battle. The badges were worn on the bonnet or sash by men and women. Many were simply a sprig from a particular plant, but some were made of paper or other common materials. In the case of the Jacobites during their revolution again England, members of the rebellion wore a small bunch of white ribbon called a "white cockade". The tune would commonly have been played on bagpipes, the instrument of Scottish pride. I play it on the hurdy gurdy.
