about

This is one of the most popular American fiddle tunes in the traditional music canon, but it originated in either Scotland or Ireland, where it has been played for over 200 years (The tune dates back to at least the 1760s). During the American Civil War, "Soldier's Joy" came to refer to a mixture of whiskey, beer, and heroin used to anesthetize soldiers to the horrors of battle.

lyrics

15 cents for the morphine, 25 cents for the beer / 15 cents for the morphine, they're gonna take me away from here / I am my momma's darling boy, I am my momma's darling boy, I am my momma's darling boy / sing a little song for the soldier's joy (etc...)
